NYC: 9/11 MEMORIAL
During my visit to New York City I visited the National
September 11 Memorial, located at the World Trade Centre site, the former
location of the Twin towers that were destroyed during the attacks, in order to
pay my respect for the attacks in 2001. The visit was extremely emotional and surreal,
and I found it a first-time experience as I have never been so intensely
emotionally influenced by a space as such before.
The memorial consists of two
large square holes in the ground which have been transformed into beautiful and
peaceful fountains, which mark the actual perimeters of the spaces where the
buildings were positioned before the awful attack occurred. Around the squares
are metal plaques engraved with the full names of those who sadly lost their
lives during the attack.
The most touching aspect of the experience was seeing names
of those whose birthdays it would have been that day, shown by roses placed into
their engraved names. Many people stood around the space in the silence,
staring into the fountain with strong emotion displayed through their faces and
body language. I was really moved by the experience and couldn’t help but shed
a tear. Being in the actual location of the tragic event truly caused a feeling
that was indescribable, and I will never forget how it affected me that day.
The space has been created in a lovely way to remember the victims and my
thoughts and prayers go out to those who were lost in the event and their loved
ones also.
Below are some photographs I took of the memorial.
