BRIGHT & BOLD: A TREND STORY PROJECT

For my current project I was allocated the trend story 'Bright and Bold', a trend story which I like and have enjoyed researching, which inspired me to dedicate this blog post to my findings. I have explored the context behind this trend story, starting with the visual, historical and cultural background of my trend story, its origins, connotations, development updates and subversions, and how it has been re-interpreted over the years.

The focus of Bright and Bold is colour, vibrancy, saturation, shades, palettes and block colour. I began exploring colour in fashion over the years, starting with the florescent colours worn in the 80's and the iconic vibrant appearance of this decade. Bright colour has been popular ever since and has  created trends such as the neon hype we have today; Prada's recent womenwear campaign 'neon dream' is focused on florescent highlighter shades, capturing the vibrancy of Los Angeles with billboards, convertibles glowing technicolor - a campaign which represents culture. I also looked into Prabal Gurung's spring summer '19 show during New York fashion week, which was a showcase of global fashion diversity, featuring models from 35+ different countries. The collection used colour as it's universal language and the venue featured colourful prayer flags that were strung across the ceiling for the show; I found this concept very interesting and unique.

I then wanted to explore Bright and Bold in other areas of the fashion landscape, so I looked into how colour is used in social events/celebrations. I was instantly reminded of the Holi Festival of Colour and how the colour is used to represent and spread the positivity of the celebration because of colours general ability to make us feel positive. I also explored the LGBT community and how the rainbow flag used to represent this community represents the diversity within it, and again, positivity.

I like this trend story because of how statement it is, and also because colour is a huge part of our everyday lives - from advertising, our interests/preferences, our emotional state, fashion, etc. I want to go on to explore specific bright colours and how the symbolise meanings, and perhaps other areas of the fashion landscape.
